The ‘caves’ are not natural, but are the product of mining for flint, and chalk for lime-burning from the mid13th to the 19th centuries.

Today the ‘caves’ form a 35.4 km long series of interconnecting caverns and tunnels. During first World War the ‘caves’ were used as an ammunition dump for the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich and in the 1930s the tunnels were used for mushroom cultivation.
