24 April to 1 May 2019

Guide: David Beard MA, FSA, FSA Scot

Tarbert Castle

The EMAS 2019 spring study tour will be to Kintyre and the Isle of Arran. We will be based in Ardrishaig, a pleasant small town on the shores of Loch Gilp, which is also the starting point of the Crinan Canal, a fine example of 19th century engineering known as ‘Britain’s most beautiful shortcut’.

Kintyre has a fine selection of prehistoric and medieval monuments, while the Isle of Arran - often described as ‘Scotland in miniature - has a number of interesting monuments, often in beautiful scenery.

Sites that we will visit include the Machrie Moor Stone Circles; Dunadd Fort; Brodick Castle; Saddell Abbey; the Dunfallandy Pictish Cross Slab; Auchindrain Folk Museum and the Scottish Crannog Centre.
