The EMAS spring study tour for 2019 will be to Orkney. The Orkney Islands have a wealth of superb archaeological sites ranging in date from prehistory to the medieval period.

We will be based in Kirkwall, and we will use the Roll On Roll Off ferry services to visit the various islands.

Prehistoric sites of Skara Brae; Ring of Brodgar; Maes Howe; Stones of Stenness; Tomb of the Eagles; Broch of Gurness and Midhowe Brooch and Chambered Cairn.

The Viking Period sites include Brough of Birsay; Brough of Deerness; Cubbie Roo’s Castle; St Magnus Church, Egilsay; and the Round Church, Earl’s Bu and Horizontal Mill at Orphir.

Later medieval sites include the Earl’s Palace, the Bishop’s Palace and the Cathedral. We will also visit the small, but excellent museum in Kirkwall.
